We are in this pandemic together

Moderne Eye Optometry re-opened on June 2, 2020

Your safety, our safety, and community safety continues to be our focus into 2021.

Thank you for supporting our small independent healthcare practice located in Oakland since 1993. This is our first pandemic (“FFT” as Brené Brown puts it) in 27 years as a small Oakland business and we will proceed with caution and empathy. The scientific community studying this pandemic still does not fully understand this novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and the resulting illness, COVID-19. Below are guidelines we have adapted from the California Optometric Association, the American Academy of Optometry, the CDC and OSHA regarding best practices for delivery of patient care in Optometry offices.

We trust Dr. Fauci.

Moderne Eye Optometry In-Person Appointment Protocols

After scheduling an appointment with you via text, email or voice, we will confirm your appointment by texting  you a COVID questionnaire AND email to you our safety protocols (described below) and Ocular and Medical History Form (attached to this email).  As our space and appointment times are restricted and limited, we ask that you arrive within 5 min. of your appointment time so we have time to fulfill our safety procedures.  We may fill non-confirmed appointments times from our waiting list.

Moderne Eye Optometry’s safety protocols for in-person appointments apply to everyone:

a.  Please wear a face mask to our office.  If you do not have one, we will provide one for you to wear.  Your safety is our priority.  We have new protocols in place for disinfection and personal protection from aerosolized droplets.  We need your email to send you information about your visit.  We need your cell phone number to text you when we are ready for you to enter our office.

b.  You will receive a SARS-CoV-2 questionnaire prior to your exam or optical appointment and you must return the questionnaire prior to appt.

c.  Attached to your appointment email is the  Ocular and Medical History Form for you to complete and bring into your eye exam appointment.  We prefer you bring in a paper copy as this minimizes the exposure of your health information online.

d.  We are seeing people by appointment only.  This will allow for contact tracing if necessary.  Send a text to us at (510) 653-4242 to let us know you are waiting in your car or outside.

e.  If you want to shop for new glasses in our optical area, you will need an appointment with the Optician.  This can be on the same day as your exam appointment or on a different day and must be scheduled in advance.

Exam patient check-in by Optometrist

▪  Text us at (510) 653-4242 to let us know you have arrived.   Please have your Ocular Medical History Form with you.  You can email form to us at meostaff@modeye.com.

▪  Before you enter our office, the Optometrist will once again ask you about any fever or respiratory illness and whether you or a family member has had contact with another person with confirmed COVID-19 in the past 2 to 14 days.

▪  If you answer yes to either question, our policy is not to see you but rather ask that you first speak to their primary care physician about testing for COVID-19.

▪  Patients will be notified via text that we are ready for them to proceed to the front door for the exam.  This allows us time to disinfect surfaces between each patient encounter.

▪  At the front door, the Optometrist or Optician will take your temperature with a non-contact thermometer and will also measure your oxygen saturation level with an oximeter.  If your temperature measures 100°F or higher ( per CDC), you will be referred to your primary care physician (PCP) and not permitted in the office.  An oxygen saturation of less than 92 %SpO2 will be referred to your primary care physician.   It is your choice to decline the temperature measurement and or the oxygen saturation measurement, however, it is our policy at this time, to refuse to see anyone who we are not able to prescreen with a questionnaire and a temperature check and a pulse oximeter check.

Safety protocols for the eye exam:

  • If you do not have a mask, we will provide a mask for you to keep.  We can refuse to see patients who do not wear a mask.
  • We will see patients who have a disability which prevents them from wearing a mask during specific office hours.  Please let us know this is the case and we will offer you an appointment during specified hours.  Patients who are higher at-risk from 3 pm – 6 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
  • Patients will be asked to use hand sanitizer or wash their hands for 20 seconds with soap and water when you first enter the exam room.
  • Examination will address a chief complaint.  Pupil dilation, intra-ocular pressures, screening visuals fields only with presenting signs and symptoms.  One separate dilation appointment is available as part of the exam within 12 months at no extra charge.
  • The Optometrist will speak as little as possible during the slit-lamp examination, and request that the patient also refrain from talking.  This is to minimize aerosolized droplets.
  • Only one patient and one optometrist in the 10ft  x 9 ft exam room at a time.
  • Exam time is limited to 30 minutes.
  • Contact Lens renewal requires patients to come in for appointment wearing contact lenses for a minimum of 4 hours prior to exam appointment.  If you do not have a pair of contacts to wear into appointment, we can order you contacts for a separate shipping and handling fee prior to your appointment.  If you want to be refit into new or different contacts, you will be charged the fitting fee when we dispense contact lens trials to you.

All Optical Services – by appointment only

▪  Choosing a new frame from our Optical area, or picking up your new glasses or obtaining an adjustment for your eyeglasses purchased from Moderne Eye will be by appointment only.

▪  Only one patient in any work area (waiting room, dispensary, etc.) at a time.  We ask you do not bring anyone with you unless you notify us in advance so we can allow separation space for safety.

Optical appointment check-in by Optican or Optometrist

▪  Text us at (510) 653-4242 to let us know you have arrived.

▪  Before you enter our office, you must have responded to our COVID questionnaire.

▪  If you answer yes to either question, our policy is not to see you but rather ask that you first speak to their primary care physician about testing for COVID-19.

▪  Patients will be notified via text that we are ready for them to proceed to the front door for the exam.  This allows us time to disinfect between each patient encounter.

▪  At the front door, the Optician will take your temperature with a non-contact thermometer and may also measure your oxygen saturation level with an oximeter.  If your temperature measures 100°F or higher (per CDC)or an oxygen saturation of less than 92%SpO2, you will be referred to your primary care physician (PCP) and not permitted in the office.  It is your choice to decline the temperature measurement and or oxygen saturation, however, it is our policy at this time, to refuse to see anyone who we are not able to prescreen with a questionnaire and a temperature check and a pulse oximeter check.

For patients who have “recovered from COVID-19”

▪If SARS-CoV-2 testing has been positive, the patient should wear a surgical mask. The treating optometrist should wear an N95 mask, rather than a surgical mask, in addition to gown, gloves and eye protection.   Because viral shedding can be prolonged (up to 37 days in one study), repeat testing is recommended for patients prior to routine eye exams if less than 6 weeks after a COVID-19 diagnosis.  We will reschedule in-person appointments for patients who are less then 6 weeks out from a COVID-19 positive diagnosis or if patient has been exposed to someone who has tested COVID-19 positive.

In addition to our usual hygiene and disinfection protocols of hand washing and disinfecting instruments with disinfecting wipes and or 70% alcohol, we are using single use contact lens cases and single use saline for each contact lens patient and single use tonometer tips for intraocular pressure readings. We have added plastic breath shield to our slit lamp and phoropter.

We are doing our part per CDC guidelines.
